Getting Baby To Sleep All Through The Night Can Be Very Challenging For Burned Out Moms And Dads
_________________________________________________________________________
It never ceases to worry me when I encounter couples who use sleeping drugs for getting baby to sleep. I'm not only apprehensive about the baby but I'm also concerned about the parent's welfare. Everyone knows sleep medication can be dangerous for infants and young children and may not even work.
Getting baby to sleep is the family's principal goal when they are exhausted which is why some decide to offer their baby "a little something to help him get to sleep". By doing this you could be sentencing your baby to a lifetime of being dependent on medication. As an adult he might always be burdened with a poor sleep routine.
There has been no assessment on the effects of sleeping medications on babies. In fact some over the counter (OTC) sleep medicines contain histamines which can actually act as a stimulant in some infants. As you may imagine, getting baby to sleep using these types of meds would unquestionably backfire.
However these unhappy parents warrant compassion rather than disapproval because they are usually at the end of their patience. Every parent with a restless baby is incessantly looking for ways to help that baby sleep. Hundreds of dollars are spent every year with just one aim - getting baby to sleep.
Parents have the following three problems:
Their baby naps most of the day but is awake the majority of the night.
Baby falls asleep but won't stay asleep.
Baby becomes very distraught when put to bed at night and screams loudly.
Stay at home moms can generally cope ok as they can catch up with some rest in the course of the day. Yet for those with full time careers, life can be very grim indeed.
If you recognize yourself referred to above then this was developed specially for you, so don't lose hope, because there is an answer to the sleeping pill trap and it very likely isn't as distressing as you believe.
Here are some tips you can try for getting baby to sleep...
Crying it out - Now this won't appeal to the soft hearted parent! This approach requires you to disregard your child's crying for an arranged amount of time before attending to him. As time goes on, the time between visits increases. Tough love perhaps, but it works! Sooner or later baby will learn that his crying just isn't achieving anything so he gives up and goes to sleep.
I fully understand the above won't appeal to everyone. However balance this with the fact that, in the long run, you're teaching your baby quality sleep habits.
A sleep routine - Even a simple one works well. A bath followed by a hug and a quick bedtime story will do the trick. It's best not to include any games or exciting activities in the sleep routine and make sure to do it every evening in the same order.
Organic and natural remedies - These are a good idea for very busy moms and dads. Natural and alternative remedies are a safer and more effective choice for getting baby to sleep.
